Mardi Gras Time and Delicious King Cake

Mardi Gras is just around the corner, February 12th to be exact and being that Fat Tuesday  is knocking at the door, I wanted to share with you one of the longest traditions of Mardi Gras…besides beads and parades of course…it’s King Cake!

If you have never heard about this, a little history from Wikipedia says The “king cake” takes its name from the biblical three kings.  The Eve of Epiphany (the night of January 5th) is popularly known as Twelfth Night (the Twelve Days of Christmas are counted from Christmas Eve until this night). The season for king cake extends from the end of the Twelve Days of Christmas (Twelfth Night and Epiphany Day), up until Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday;” the day before the start of Lent.

Inside every cake is a tiny baby (generally plastic now, but sometimes this baby might be made of porcelain or even gold). The tradition of having King Cake Parties has evolved through time, and the person who receives the slice of cake with the baby is asked to continue the festivities by hosting the next King Cake party-Mardi Gras New Orleans

What is great about King Cake is there are so many different recipes and ways to decorate them. Below you will find my favorites along with recipes so you can part in the tradition too…don’t forget about the baby!
